[comp.sys.next] kermit for the next

mike@shogun.cc.umich.edu (Michael Nowak) (07/11/89)

Does anyone have working binary or source for Kermit file transfer for
the NeXT? The version I have for Sun won't compile on the NeXT and
I don't have time to figure out why. Thanks for your help.

I got Kermit 4E(070) to compile on a NeXT by making some minor changes
to the Makefile and 2/3 source files. A compressed tar saveset
containing the source directory I used is available through anonymous
Internet FTP to emx.utexas.edu, in pub/next/kermit4e070.tar.Z. I also
just submitted a copy of this file to the NeXT archive on cs.orst.edu.

Don't forget to add the writeable-strings compiler flag to your kermit
makefile. 4e(070) mucks around with a string constant that isn't somewhere
in the file send code; adding "-fwriteable-strings" tells the gnu compiler
to allow this.

ps- check the man page for the exact wording... could be writable instead....

I just saw a note on this topic on one of the Bitnet NeXT discussion
groups. The poster quoted Frank da Cruz at Columbia as follows:

"The as-yet-unreleased test version of C-Kermit works on the NeXT. You
can get it using anonymous FTP from watsun.cc.columbia.edu. cd to the
directory kermit/test and get the files ckw*, ckc*, cku*, rename the
file ckuker.mak to makefile, and then "make next"."

I hope this helps. I haven't tried it myself.
