I just wrote a program that converts one of the Mac sound file formats to the NeXT sound file format. I'm not sure what the name of the Mac format is, but it seems to be an 8-bit raw digitazed file. I got the Mac sound files from a couple of anonymous FTP servers. If anybody is interested, I'll send them a uuencoded tar file which includes a WriteNow doc, and source. The doc includes an attempt at a description for the Mac and NeXT file formats.
