Looks like I might take posession of an immaculate '82 Trans Am in the near future. It has the standard non-HO V8 and a four speed stick. (Getting a TA with a manual transmission is a real trick in the Bay Area, but that's another story.) First, from all you performance freaks, what can I do to the suspension that will increase the handling without being too harsh? I can just blindly buy the pieces that make up the current Pontiac 'WS6' package, but can't help feeling that I might be able to do better (price and performance) with aftermarket gadgets. Specifically, what would do the most good: bigger stabilizers, or stiffer shocks? And how would one go about changing the steering ratio? (This last might be beyond my budget. Right now I'm compiling information.) Second, for California performance freaks, what can I do to the engine that doesn't bring me afoul the law? Never mind what you can get away with, I'm aware that it's 'only illegal if you get caught'. I want to know what you can do to increase the output of the standard '82 V8 engine and still be legal in the state of California. Heard a rumor that there is a turbo kit that has been EPA approved, but I don't have information on it, and would prefer other methods. (Like supercharging or a good fuel injection system. Any approved units out there?) Please mail me any information. I promise to summerize, and include any of my own experiances that might be found interesting. I am following other leads as well.
