[net.auto] rustproofing

chris (09/03/82)

Anyone from a state where they use lots of salt on the roads during the
winter ever buy a new car and NOT get rustproofing? My automotive
future father-in-law says rustproofing is a scam and Consumer Report says
it's a dealer pack, so I am interested in some field test data...

Seems to me that if one washes the car somewhat during the winter there
should be no reason for the car to rust out from the inside any faster
than the outside (which isn't covered by rustproofing garrantees).

Anyone with info? Opinion?

one thing which shocked me was discovering that taking your car to
the car wash does not, as claimed, was off all the salt, wax and protect your
car and thus limit corrosion. Most commercial car washes reuse the water,
and so it is really a soap-and-salt water solution that you are getting put
on your car. Really a bad thing to do...

Does anyone know of any hard evidence concerning after-market rust
"proofing"? Most people in the north east seem to get it, but I
have never heard any evidence other than testimonials that it works!
The people at Consumer Reports claim (April 1985 'Auto' issue):

Protection, if any, depends on competence of installer.
If car's drain holes are blocked, rustproofing can accelerate
	corrosion.

Dealer "pack"; not recommended. Most cars are designed to
resist corrosion and won't benefit from added rustproofing.

Unfortunately, they don't give any facts either. Does anyone know of
any studies on rust proofing effectiveness? What are the arguments for
and against it? How much does it cost (if any) to maintain a car so
that a rust-proofing warranty is not voided?

I'll summarize if I get a lot of responses.

I just purchased a new Toyota. I need to get it
rustproofed. Any advice on where I should take it
and if I should have it done by a place that gives
a warranty?
