I just got word that my "accelerator" is at the service center but that there will be a charge to install it. I thought everything was free. At least that's what the letter from Steve seemed to say. Anyone care to comment on their experience with this?

I am the Systems Manager for the School of Computer Science here at McGill, and we do our own support (thus I am the guy to whom you would present the special voucher card from NeXT if you bought your machine while associated with the School.) From what I remember, we will be paid a nominal fee by NeXT to install each drive in a machine, upon receipt of the voucher card from the owner. I have just recently received the first card, and it is lost somewhere on my desk :-) and have not yet looked closely at the paperwork NeXT sent us, but assume it's something like "send us that card, get the credit". Anyways, if I remember the terms of the standard Higher Education Purchase Agreement correctly, I suspect your support centre is free to charge anything it wants for doing the install, but I would think it pretty crass if they did. After all, if I've got this right, they're already getting paid once by NeXT for what is really only a few minutes work. If they really are charging you, ask them about their agreement with NeXT. Maybe they aren't aware of the deal. One caveat. I don't have the paperwork in front of me, and I may have got it wrong. If it really matters, mail me a follow-up and I'll extract the relevant details.
