Hi All, I want to hook "my" NeXT up to the Unix uucp (mail) network/internet (as opposed to USENET == news). So far, it isn't working, but I've never set up uucp before, so I'm not shocked. Basically, uupoll starts up uucico, but the modem is never touched (in other words, I don't hear anything on the modem's speaker). The typical LOGFILE error message is "FAILED (HSM no carrier)". Essentially no info is generated at any debugging level. I'm using some variety of Mac serial cable ("From Mac Plus/SE/II to Hayes Compatible" - presumably a Mac port A cable) on port A, which probably doesn't have the carrier detect line, but tip doesn't mind and I only need outgoing uucp (wouldn't MIND incoming, though). If this is the problem, what name/description can I use to get the correct cable from a know-little salescritter (e.g. Businessland)? Excerpts from (my changes to) the relevant files appear below. I've also included a bit of /etc/remote, which works fine for tip (except it doesn't do the hayes disconnect sequence). This may be quite obvious to some of you, and I would very much appreciate any pointers/coaching you can provide (e-mail, or phone (after noon, pst)). Thanks! -David {uunet, ucsd}!telesoft!dar, dar@sdcsvax.ucsd.edu (619)450-1236 ====== /etc/remote ====== work, but don't disconnect. dial2400|2400 Baud Hayes attributes:\ :dv=/dev/cua:br#2400:at=hayes:du: UNIX-2400|2400 Baud dial-out to another UNIX system:\ :el=^U^C^R^O^D^S^Q@:ie=#%$:oe=^D:tc=dial2400: somemachine|sm:\ :pn=5555555:cm=:tc=UNIX-2400: ====== /private/etc/uucp/L-devices ====== ACU cua unused 300 hayes2400tone ACU cua unused 1200 hayes2400tone ACU cua unused 2400 hayes2400tone ==== L.sys ==== # using a basic unix connect sequence. somemachine Any ACU 2400 5555555 ogin:--ogin: smlogin ssword: smpasswd ==== USERFILE ==== , /usr/spool
