[comp.sys.next] SCSI Standards and SLIP

karl@cgdisis.ucar.edu (Karl Sierka) (02/24/90)

I just bought a NeXT. Really nice machine. I also bought a Hitachi
DK515C-78 disk. I had a cable made but I have no easy way of really testing it.
The drive is terminated internally.
When powering up, the cube does not see the disk. It also does
not see the 40M accelerator drive. There is an error message issued after
the SCSI self test. Error code 65. I looked this up in the manual, "Cannot
load counter with test pattern". Anyone seen this and know what it means?
I hooked the disk up to a Sun 3/60, and it was able to see the
drive. (I used a different cable) Does anyone know where I can order a
cable that will work? (DB25 to DB50, not Centronics) Is there some way to
get into an extended diagnostics mode? Is the NeXT SCSI 1,2 or 3? Does NeXT
SCSI need parity enabled? (help, help, help...)

Another question - does anyone have SLIP running? Is there someplace I can
dig for more information? I tried running the BSD program slattach, for
which there is a man page on the NeXT but no program. (I grabbed the
source from uunet.) Is this program going to be the way to use slip? It
appears that one may run slattach, then ifconfig the tty line as an
ethernet controller. Is this true?
		     Thanks in advance,
			    karl
