[comp.sys.next] Can't get a shell window

cc3z+@andrew.cmu.edu (Christopher N. Carlson) (03/14/90)

Suddenly and mysteriously my shell processes refuse to put up windows.
The shell processes start and throw up main menus, but selecting "New
window" doesn't seem to have an effect. It also doesn't seem to matter
who I log in as.

Can anyone suggest what is wrong?

From the workspace, open up a console window (Utilities -> Console, I
do believe). It will probably show a message along the lines of
'/bin/noshell non-existant' or some such nonsense. If so, the path to
your account is probably mucked-- make sure you can actually get at
your home directory and everything is okay there.

If the probably is global, it sounds like one of the *.cf (various
configuration files) are slightly buggered-- that would be another
possibility.

BTW: (to C.Carlson) I could have a look if the above is too cryptic
(a distinct possibility).
