[comp.sys.next] What's in a name?

eps@toaster.SFSU.EDU (Eric P. Scott) (03/29/90)

I'm curious about a discrepancy in RFC 1060; TCP port 178 is
assigned for NextStep, but the "UNIX" list shows NSWS on 3049
(which NeXT used in the 0.9 release). /etc/services has
NSWS on 178.

I'd like to be able to ship DNS master files around in source
form; Now that 178 is officially blessed can we agree on service
names so I can list it in WKS records?

RFC 1060 Assigned Numbers March 1990

                                 PORT NUMBERS

Ports are used in the TCP [45,106] to name the ends of logical
connections which carry long term conversations. For the purpose of
providing services to unknown callers, a service contact port is
defined. This list specifies the port used by the server process as its
contact port. The contact port is sometimes called the "well-known
port".

   Port Assignments:

   Decimal Keyword Description References
   ------- ------- ----------- ----------

                                UNIX PORTS

By convention, ports in the range 256 to 1024 are used for "Unix
Standard" services. Listed here are some of the normal uses of these
   port numbers.

   Service Name Port/Protocol Description
   ------------ ------------- -----------

   NSWS 3049/tcp
