Recently, someone tried to log into the root account from a remote machine with the proper password without success. Now, I can su to root with that password and can log into the console, but attempts with telnet or rlogin meet with no success. look at the /etc/ttys file. You need to set the terminals to a secure state if you want to be able to log in as root.
