[comp.sys.next] .places

I grep'd through most of the on-line manuals, and I can't seem to find a
reference to the .places files that seem to almost randomly appear in my
directories.  Could someone please explain what these are for?

These are files the Workspace uses to cache the contents of directories.

Cache?  No.  It simply saves the locations of the icons in the Macintosh
like Workspace Browser windows.  You will note that if .places is deleted,
it is not created again until such a window is opened for that directory.
