I've been using XNeXT as a server for X clients running on several DECstation 3100's, a couple of which run X11R4 and a couple of which run DECwindows (which is built on top of X11R3). I've been having a lot of problems with the window manager hanging intermittently, leaving me stranded in whatever window I was last using, or having the entire server freeze up so that I have to kill it. The problems have occurred regardless of whether I'm running uwm or twm on the NeXT itself or using the DECstations' X11R3 or X11R4 uwm or twm. I'm inclined to chalk it up to the lack of robustness of this first release of XNeXT and hope that the next version will be much sturdier, but if anyone else has had similar problems and managed to track down why it would be real useful for me to know what they discovered (especially since I've been bragging about how wonderful it is that I can now do X on my NeXT to folks who ridiculed the lack of X capabilities before!). ----- Don Thomson ----- MACC, 1210 W. I have not heard of any activity on campus on future releases of XNeXT. There may be some activity this summer, but I have not heard of any firm commitment from anyone on this. As before, when I hear news I will post it here. pasc -- Pascal Chesnais, Research Specialist, Electronic Publishing Group Media Laboratory, E15-348, 20 Ames Street, Cambridge, Ma, 02139 (617) 253-0311 email: lacsap@plethora.media.mit.edu (NeXT)
