For those who enjoy XNeXT now, I am a naive user of X window. All I know is typing "xinit", running emacs, and working on my project to meet the homework deadline. Now, I finally have time to have more experience on NeXT in this summer. After I installed the XNeXT sucessfully, the joy didn't last long. 1. I first typed "/LocalApps/XNext -su -bs" and I got a menu, a X cursor and a "X server Screen0",but black background inside window. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ 2. Then, I point x cursor on window bar, edge, and pushed button. Exptect to have a pop up menu but nothing happen. ( I did changed button setting ) 3. I typed "xinit" and then got the following enclosure error message. So I tried a. printenv ====> the path seems ok. b. ls /usr/bin/X11 ==> I can't find the "X" program. 4. May be I need some initial files (.xinitrc,....) 5. I have four books about X window system(O'Reilly&Associates, Inc). I can't enjoy these books until I get XNeXT going. 6. The XNeXT source should be ok.(from First Compilation OD,lighthouse) For those who currently enjoy XNeXT, Please send me those file (if needed)and point out my mistakes Thanks in advance. ---- Tyng-Jing Yang. ---------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------- localhost> xinit xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): no server "X" in PATH Use the -- option, or make sure that /usr/bin/X11 is in your path and that "X" is a program or a link to the right type of server for your display. Has anyone tried to compile X programs? I always got messages like symbol table out of date and rerun ranlib. Any fix? The other thing is I can not seem to get twm to work!!! I can invoke it and get the program running, but the keyboard input all goes to the terminal window... Installing XNeXT was a much more complex task than installing X11R4 on a system supporting it. I think that an X user will be frustrated unless they are also an X system administrator. You will certainly need all of the . files that you used on any other X system. Also don't forget to set in Preferences the right mouse button to menus; this is essential. This is news.
