[comp.sys.next] NeXT.Canon.Japanese

Anybody know the latest information of NeXT and Japanese capability
(Canon is supposed to be working on this)? Last thing I heard was that
Kanji NeXT is going to be released in three years(!!) or so? Is this
correct at all and were there any changes made on the plan?

I saw the Japanese version of Edit at the 60th Annual Business Show
held May 16-19 here in Tokyo, at the Harumi Convention Center.
Canon had a tasteful, quite large booth devoted to the NeXT, and showed
FrameMaker and a few other applications. What drew the crowd (besides the
Steve Jobs video) was the demo of kanji entry. The demonstrator entered
romaji which the software then converted (in-line) to kanji. The size was
around 12 point and couldn't be changed. Nor, apparently, could it be edited.
The characters looked a little rough, too, but I'm sure they will
look great in the release version. The stuff at the show was very, very
beta, but it is a beginning, and I for one am glad to see it.

No definite release date yet, although at the machine's introduction
last year Canon talked about the end of 1990. I don't know if they
will make it by then, but I'm sure it won't take anywhere near three years!
