For those Corvette "Purists" who don't want to see a vette
with a v-6 , consider:
1. The first vettes (53-54) had an inline 6 !
(of course the three carbs helped )
2. When you imagine a V-6 in a vette , don't imagine the
doggy performance of a 79-84 full-size car with a V-6:
A. The power - to - weight ratio is considerably better.
B. GM's labs , at the time I left their employ in 1984 ,
had a 229 V-6 off-road engine developing 725 HP !
Although performance won't ever reach that in a pro-
duction auto , it'll be an awful lot better than the
wimpy , rough-idling V-6 we're all used to now.
C. The 231 v-6 was one of the "dirtiest" engines ever made ,
from a pollution standpoint. To make it pass EPA , they
had to heap on the emission controls , drastically de-tune
it , and generally band-aid it to death ! There are fixes
on top of fixes in its emission controls ,and the EPA is
still nailing them on it.
D. Some new fuel injection techniques are helping the 229 V-6
to burn cleaner in the combustion chamber , requiring
less clean-up afterwards. The result is a HIGH PERFORMANCE
STREET ENGINE.
3. The vette will continue to get lighter , and MUST get better
mileage to raise GM's fleet mileage average .
4. Finally , the combination of lighter car and more powerful
V-6 engines could wind up giving you a better power /weight
ratio than todays vette with a 305 V8 , and having the
engine in the middle wouldn't hurt cornering a bit !

What was the _size_ of the '53 Vette, and what is the _size_ of the '85?

Either the poster typed it too fast and got 0 and the 5 swapped, or he doesn't know much about the latest crop of Corvette. Just for the record, 1984 'vettes had the infamous "CROSS-FIRE INJECTION" dual throttle body fuel injection system on a 350 C.I. engine. The '85 and '86 Vettes have the "TUNED PORT INJECTION" direct port electronic fuel injection, still on a 350 C.I. engine. The 305 has *NEVER* been offered in the Corvette. ----------- Rick Bensene {ihnp4, decvax, allegra, cbosg, ucbvax}!tektronix!tekig4!rickb Phone: Weekdays (503) 627-3559 BBS: (503) 254-0458 300/1200 baud, 24 hours a day US Mail: Tektronix, Inc. - P.O.
