This is may be a stupid question: I noticed a long time ago that the optical disks have 233066 K capacity, according to the unix utility df. So why is it touted as having a 256 Meg capacity? Is the other 12% of the boasted capacity being used as spare blocks to cover for the bad ones or something like that? If so, then does anyone know what the statistics are for bad blocks? More generally, what percentage of the capacity for other storage media is reserved for masking for bad blocks due to manufacturing errors or failures during use? thanks, -Avery Wang awang@isl.stanford.edu
