I was running a large Mathematica job for the past few days and also a Maple job via terminal on another machine. Left last night and things were cranking away. When I came in this morning, the console screen was black, and would not respond to the brightness key. The machine was still running, although I could not find a remote terminal to remote login to find out what was happening. I finally gave up and got into the ROM monitor (at least I used the usual key strokes for it) and did bsd. The login panel came up (very dim) after the reboot and the brightness key worked again. I don't think I could have run out of space (there was over 300 MB of space for swap). Did something get hosed? Monitor seems fine now. Room wasn't hot and the power was steady last night they tell me. So what happened? I didn't really lose any data, but did lose a lot of time. Has this ever happened to any of you?
