[net.auto] Corvair in VW Bus

billfoy@aero.ARPA (Bill Foy) (09/21/85)

I am installing a 66 Corvair (two carb, not a 140) engine, trans(4-speed)
and diff into my 71 VW camper. The trans and diff are rebuilt and I am
about to rebuild the engine. I want a nice driving, RELIABLE vehicle, so I
don't want to get carried away building it up and start wearing out C-V
joints, etc., but I am tempted to extend the rpm range a little, by
replacing the cam, valve springs, etc. I also plan to put in a breakerless
distributor or photo-diode/shutter conversion. I understand the engine is
now good to about 5500 rpm and am thinking I might like to set it up to go
to 6500 or 7000. I am also having thoughts that I should leave it stock. I
would appreciate suggestions about whether or not to at all, how far to go
in rpm, what is involved in going how far, cams, lifters, valves, springs,
do's, don't's, $$$, brands, etc. I would also be interested in general
advice on rebuilding the Corvair, such as new after-market replacement of
stock parts that just run and last better.

I'm sure there must be a bunch of Corvair nuts out there that have a wealth
of knowledge to share.

Thanks in advance,

Bill Foy
