[comp.sys.next] used cubes: a good idea?

dpaulso@relay.nswc.navy.mil (Dave Paulson) (07/16/90)

I have a chance to by a used NeXT. This system has 8Mb, an OD, a
330Mb Hard Disk, and the bundled software. Some questions for you:

 1. What's the depreciation on computers in general and NeXTs in
particular? (i.e., what's a fair price?)

 2. What rights will I have to receive future {hard, soft}ware upgrades?

 3. I'll be running this system at my home. What sort of physical
environment is required for this machine? To what extent should I
condition the air and/or the power?

 4. How reliable is the hardware? Should I look into getting a
service contract after I receive the system, or should I just take it
to (I guess) BusinessLand should it ever need service? What sort of
preventive maintenance is required?

 5. Any other advice or comments you care to make? Would you go this
route (why or why not)?

Please mail replies to dpaulso@relay.nswc.navy.mil, as this is
probably of limited interest. I'll summarize if interest warrants.

thanks.

/dave
