[comp.sys.next] NeXT Printer through lwsrv

crum@alicudi.usc.edu (Gary L. Crum) (07/26/90)

Printing from Macintosh systems to NeXT Printers via CAP with lwsrv
works quite well, and yes, lwsrv captures "laserprep" (md dictionary)
files as sent by Macintosh LaserWriter driver software. Those files
need to be edited slightly to work with lwsrv (whether lwsrv is spooling
to a LaserWriter connected by a serial line or a NeXT printer).

In response to the request for examples, I put the file:
-rw-rw-r-- 1 crum 84667 Jul 25 20:53 lwsrv_NeXT_examples.tar.Z
containing:

in the anonymous FTP directory on host cs.utah.edu, for people that
are interested in this. I have also been using the CAP papif and
macdump applications to print from NeXTs to AppleTalk LaserWriters and
to backup Macintosh volumes (respectively), so let me know if anybody
needs help configuring those systems, e.g. a printcap entry and
modified Transcript psif script for NeXTs. I don't know if those
examples are included in the NeXT CAP distribution announced recently
in comp.sys.next. What Stanford host is that on?

Oh, but printing from Macintosh Applications running on top of A/UX
2.0 to lwsrv PAP servers failed when I tried it. Well, I guess the
voice "Your printer is waiting for paper" notification of the NeXT
printer system is worth that incompatibility. Just kidding.

Please note that I have removed the actual md.*.ps files from the
lwsrv_NeXT_examples.tar.Z file I put in cs.utah.edu:~ftp/pub, leaving
the instructions by which they were derived from Mac-downloaded LaserPrep
files.

Thanks to Edward Moy (edmoy@violet.Berkeley.EDU) for pointing out that
Apple's md copyright probably precludes making the md definitions
available by anonymous FTP. Note that his macps/prepfix is a system
for preparing LaserPrep files for download to printers, e.g. through
lwsrv to a NeXT printer. It is available as
	info-mac/unix/macps-22.shar
by anonymous FTP from
	sumex.stanford.edu
