The latest "Personal WorkStation" magazine, in an article on GUI's, estimated the installed base of NeXT's was 5000 (= $50 million in sales, roughly). It said NeXT was not a major player in the workstation market, but seemed to be carving out a niche as a machine for the corporate elite who will pay any price for a suitable platform for special purpose software. (I guess this is their interpretation of the recent deal of 250 NeXT's for an ad agency.)
