I am currently looking into buying a large (>800MB) tape backup or WORM system, presumably an 8mm system. I also need to store some databases on these, so it is vital that I can mount the tape, and write to/read from a stream on this tape easily (preferably with standard C mechanisms of fopen, fread, fwrite, fclose). It is also absolutely crucial that no data is lost within a year or two, and that the device can not only be hooked up to NeXT, but also other SCSI devices. Here comes where I hope to get help: (1) What would you recommend? Where should I buy it? (2) If you have one, did you ever have problems with data losses? I know that PCPC sells such an 8mm tape for about $4,000 (academic price). I have heard about Exabyte---is this the standard? What's an Exabyte's cost and who do I contact for pricing? Any other devices I should look into? Thanks for any and all info. /ivo welch ivo@next.agsm.ucla.edu
