O.k. gang, this is a bizarre one. I get the message Opening pty: permission denied when I go into emacs and it try to execute (display-time). Just to make it seem like I am crazy, the problem has somehow corrected itself once again and now I can execute my (display-time) no problem. I changed nothing, I did nothing except start typing this note. It didn't work when I started to type and when I tried to repeat the error, it did work! This also affect my M-x shell, and gave me the same error message. This problem has intermitently happened now and then. I can not correlate it with anything. I am the only person on the system when it happens. Since I am root, I can log in that way and get the pty to work o.k. instead of being in my own personal account. Does this help? Any suggestions? p.s. if you have trouble emailing, try hemstree@handel.cs.colostate.edu. charles -- !===========================================================================! ! Charles H. I have also experienced this problem with the pty's and display-time.el. Also, has anyone tried to compile a program from within Emacs(M-x compile) and then have it simply say "compilation finished" without actually compiling the program? Could they be related problems? -Mike

I have exactly the same problem, and I am not sure exactly what is happening. I think it might be the same problem I have with Stuart when the window comes up and nothing happens in it, that the /dev/ttyp# is owned by someone else. I don't know how emacs "gets" a tty, but perhaps it is changing ownership of the tty _after_ attempting to get it, then allowing your second try to be successful. Only an opinion. If anyone knows the REAL answer... -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Keith Mason -- ...!uunet!ibmsupt!ibmpa!keith Disclamer: IBM knows nothing!
