[comp.sys.next] opening pty: permission denied

hemstree@jobs.mso.Colostate.Edu (Charles H. Hemstreet IV) (08/27/90)

O.k. gang, this is a bizarre one. I get the message

		Opening pty: permission denied

when I go into emacs and it try to execute (display-time). Just to
make it seem like I am crazy, the problem has somehow corrected itself
once again and now I can execute my (display-time) no problem. I
changed nothing, I did nothing except start typing this note. It
didn't work when I started to type and when I tried to repeat the
error, it did work! This also affect my M-x shell, and gave me the
same error message.

This problem has intermitently happened now and then. I can not
correlate it with anything. I am the only person on the system when
it happens. Since I am root, I can log in that way and get the pty to
work o.k. instead of being in my own personal account. Does this
help? Any suggestions?

I have also experienced this problem with the pty's and
display-time.el. Also, has anyone tried to compile a program from
within Emacs(M-x compile) and then have it simply say "compilation
finished" without actually compiling the program? Could they be
related problems?

I have exactly the same problem, and I am not sure exactly what is
happening. I think it might be the same problem I have with Stuart when
the window comes up and nothing happens in it, that the /dev/ttyp# is owned
by someone else. I don't know how emacs "gets" a tty, but perhaps it is
changing ownership of the tty _after_ attempting to get it, then allowing
your second try to be successful.

Only an opinion. If anyone knows the REAL answer...
