[comp.sys.next] Problems with setting up dial-in modem.

doug@dept.csci.unt.edu (Douglas Scott) (08/29/90)

I am attempting to set up my Hayes-compatible modem (Anchor Patriot 2400E) to
allow dialing in, most especially for uucp, because I am being set up as a
site to be reached via phone. I have followed all the instructions that I can
find regarding the /etc/ttys file and the modem settings, and the basic
procedure works.

However, most of the time it is impossible to call in because the getty on the
cube immediately asserts DTR, and once that happens I can see a flurry of
activity on the send and receive lights, followed soon after by a false login
(login -p zj or kz or whatever) apparently caused by some kind of noise. This
login then times out after 20 or 30 seconds, DTR drops and then returns, and
the process repeats. If a real dialup occurs before the false login succeeds,
all is well--but this makes uucp dialup nearly impossible.

Is there a setting to stop this? I was using /dev/ttya at first (set to
"on") and then tried /dev/ttyda, and got identical results. As I said, dialup
works if timed correctly, but most of the time it is no-go.

Thanks in advance.
