Although others can probably give you a more detailed reply (should you need
it), basically, KIP is one of two operating systems for the
Kinetics/Novell/Shiva FastPath Ethernet to AppleNet gateway.  It is, I
believe, freely available and is directly related to Bill Croft's original
software for the box but has been subsequently modified/updated (by Croft and
others).

The other operating system, that is sold with the box, is KStar.  There are
various reasons for running one versus the other (we used to run KIP, we now
run KStar) but others would have to supply you with those details/reasons.

KIP is available via anonymous ftp from sumex-aim.stanford.edu in the file
info-mac/unix/at-kip.shar and probably from other places as well.
