[net.auto] Fluid leaking from tailpipe

vacca@burdvax.UUCP (Dave Vacca) (09/23/85)

My friend has a 1978 Monte Carlo which has a fluid leak (probably
water) from the tailpipe after you start the car. Anybody ever experience
this problem or know what the solution is?

If a car is driven on short trips insufficient heat will be generated in
the exhaust system to expell water (condensation + byproduct of combustion)
from the system. Sounds as if a lot of is there when he starts up, forcing
some of it out the tailpipe.

Question: 1) does it occur at each startup regradless of the length of the
	     previous trip?

	  2) does he go through a lot of mufflers and tailpipes?

	  3) is it really water?

The fluid is water, condensing on the cold metal exhaust system. Not to
worry.
