[net.auto] overheating in a Rabbit

king@kestrel.ARPA (09/26/85)

My 1980 VW Rabbit Diesel overheated last winter (45 deg F) for no
apparent reason. The heater was also dead. There was enough fluid.
The mechanic replaced the thermostat and electric fan switch, but a
problem with either of these would be inconsistent with the heater not
working. (I was out of town and had to handle this over the phone, or
I would never have let him get away with that.)

The problem has never recurred.

Can anyone think of any problem which would be consistent with

1> No heater

2> problem goes away by itself

3> sufficient fluid

? Thanks...

Winter overheating is often caused by frozen coolant. Everything you
said except the 45 deg. F is consistent with that. Perhaps it froze
overnight?
