[comp.sys.next] Development and the '040

scott@NIC.GAC.EDU (09/24/90)

Here's an idea for all you developers:

This new '040 thingy will be accelerating our apps 2-3x minimum, and more if you
are dependant on lots of Floating Point.

_I_ am dependant on lots of windowserver speed. In the new Stuart/Terminal, doing
cat /etc/termcap takes 45 seconds. When I scroll the emulation are off the window,
it only takes 7 seconds. So, I _need_ windowserver speed.

But, would I have done all the work I did (it's essentially minimal DPS output,
now) if I'd been working on an '040? Right now, Stuart runs essentially 3x faster
than the 1.0-c version. Since the '040 would've run the 1.0-c version 2-3x faster,
it's possible I'd have not done the work.

So, what those developers need to do is develop on an '030, so that the '040
performance is acceptable.

Of course, since I've already done my work, send me an '040, thank you :-)

(BTW: Stuart1.8 is in psuedo-beta testing, now. I plan to have the thing ready
for the real world by about October 13. There, I've set a deadline, and announced
it to the world. So I cannot back down :-).
