[comp.sys.next] Miscellaneous NeXT Questions

paul@surf.sics.bu.oz (Paul Davis) (09/27/90)

Dear NeXT people;

I have a whole batch of questions associated with getting my new cube up
and running... Please e-mail, I'll summarize to csn.

Reference Lotus' offer of free Improv with purchase or upgrade before 31 Dec.
Does this include an upgrade to Release 2.0 system software? I just bought
my cube and the only upgrade I can afford is the V2 release; but I am in
desperate need of a spreadsheet which compares with Lotus(PC) and Excel(Mac).

What is the process for obtaining the new system software release? Can this
be done mail order? Due to the inability of this university to support NeXT's
I had to get my cube through the 'back door'. I suppose it is taboo for
someone to make a copy of the new release on an OD and mail it to me...?

Alas, I wish not only to read but to post news. Are there any tips on
compiling the BSD4.2 postnews for use on the NeXT? Is there a postnews
out there that already works?

How does one set an environment variable for the window manager? I need
to launch News from the Shell at this point because I can define the
NNTPSERVER variable to one of our hosts before running News&. I've tried
setting this variable using 'dwrite News NNTPSERVER hostname' but no luck.
Is there an equivalent of .cshrc for the window manager, and can I specify
the command line I want the WM to use to boot an App? eg.
     Terminal -Lines 60 -NXFixedPitchFontSize 12&

Being on the other side of the big water I have trouble getting to the
stateside archive sites. Any information about archives that service E-mail
requests would be much appreciated. Also, is it time for a comp.binaries.next
topic? That would give me the chance to download and uncompress any new
releases of utilities, games...

I've just switched to programming the NeXT from using THINK C and Pascal on
the Mac. Is there a NeXT equivalent of Apple's Tech Notes? Is there a NeXT
version of Apple's Developer CDROM? Is there an online DTS?

Many, many thanks for help with any of these...
