[comp.sys.next] Connecting NeXT to a PC or TTY

lwb@pensoft.UUCP (Lance Bledsoe) (10/02/90)

FYI, I have successfully connected a terminal (well, a pc with emulation)
to my NeXT box. Here are the steps to take if your interested:

1.  Acquire an "MAC+ to Imagewriter" 8pin -> db25 cable.
2. Plug cable into "A" port of NeXT and db25p of PC.
3. Log in as root of NeXT and:
	a. Turn "on" the "ttya" port and select proper terminal type in "/etc/ttys" file.
	b. Make whatever corrections to "/etc/gettytab" are necessary.
4. Power off/on system (actually init -1 1 might work).
5. Have fun with your terminal.

Duh! :-( I really intended "kill -1 1" i.e. kill init.

(thanks to Jon Hue)

Wait a second... OK I now have my flame proof suit on...

... and did you solve the following Problem:
        (or anyone else)
You login from the tty and turn it off (essentially DTR and RTS off).
Will you be automatically logged off?
I need that for calling in over a PAD and I dont like the idea that
if I'm disconnected anyone else can call in and continue my login.

j.k.
