[net.auto] Info on removing steering wheel loc

Yes , this is the right news group !
I used to work for a GM dealership and got to take quite a few
of those assemblies apart . A steering wheel puller ,lock ring depressor and
pivot pin remover(for tilt wheel knuckles) are nice to have ,but not absolute
necessities. As for the cam that won't come out , I have seen a few that got
cocked to one side and shoved down when the lock ring was removed as you
described. There are several grooves in the steering column that the cam could
catch on. It's the pressure of the large spring under the cam thats holding
it cocked against the column. Try pushing the cam DOWN with both thumbs until
you overcome the spring tension and then wiggle it side to side while gently
allowing it to come up.
I am assuming that you do have the lock plate and snap ring off. If
you must have a lock plate depressor , MATCO , MAC TOOLS , and SNAP-ON all
carry them. You will have to call them or catch one of their trucks at a
garage. If you still can't get it off , then use some large channel-locks to
crush it . It's mostly plastic and is only about a $4 part.
