Here is the amount of various octane boosters needed to match the strength of one part of aniline, from "Mark's Mechanical Engineers Handbook 7 ed.": Tetraethyl Lead .0295 Aniline 1.0 Ethyl Iodide 1.55 Ethyl Alchohol 4.75 Xylene 8.0 Toluene 8.8 Benzene 9.8 The conclusion to be drawn is that tetraethyl lead is far and away the most effective octane booster. It mostly comes from a 50-year old company called Ethyl Corp. that makes little if anything else. I don't know the recent price history of Ethyl Corp. stock, but I bet it is in the tank (pardon the pun :-). Wasn't somebody going to check into the availability of lead additives?
