[net.auto] Octane Boosters

mmm@weitek.UUCP (Mark Thorson) (10/08/85)

Here is the amount of various octane boosters needed to match the strength
of one part of aniline, from "Mark's Mechanical Engineers Handbook 7 ed.":

Tetraethyl Lead .0295
Aniline 1.0
Ethyl Iodide 1.55
Ethyl Alchohol 4.75
Xylene 8.0
Toluene 8.8
Benzene 9.8

The conclusion to be drawn is that tetraethyl lead is far and away the most
effective octane booster. It mostly comes from a 50-year old company called
Ethyl Corp. that makes little if anything else. I don't know the recent
price history of Ethyl Corp. stock, but I bet it is in the tank (pardon the
pun :-).

Wasn't somebody going to check into the availability of lead additives?
Maybe we could put together a group buy!
