We are running Mathematica on a network, and it seems that there is only one set of preferences. If a user runs a remote kernal, Mathematica will try to launch its kernal on the last machine used when someone else runs it. Is there some way to have individual preferences, or at least prevent the remote kernal problem? -Mike

As part of our "mandatory security fixes" when installing 1.0/1.0a systems, we do a chmod go-w /NextApps/Mathematica.app/PrefsFile.mb to close a SERIOUS risk that to my knowledge has not been fixed. (I posted details here many months ago.) The answer to your question is probably "no" until Wolfram Research abandons this mechanism in favor of NeXT Defaults or some other per-user approach. -=EPS=-
