[comp.sys.next] limit

The default limit, (listed by running the command "limit") while in the
cshell, for datasize is slightly over 5 MBytes and for stacksize is
512kBytes. The first can be changed to "unlimited" by root while it
appears that the second cannot be changed. Two questions:

1. Is there anyway of increasing stacksize (on the Sun 68020 based
system I'm using now, it's in the thousands of MBytes).

2. How can one, automatically, increase datasize to "unlimited" as one
logs in? I've tried having "getty" call a program "loginwindow1"
which augments the limit and then execs "loginwindow", but this
didn't work: Something else along the way reset the limits.

The default limit for datasize is ridiculously low when you have 40
MBytes of ram.

Along the same lines, when booting, a console message states "using 16
buffers containing 0.12 megabytes of memory". With a large amount of
ram, would it be useful to increase the number of buffers and/or their
size? If so, how does one do so?

More generally, what should one do to optimize performance when one has
large amounts of ram?
