[comp.sys.next] File system compatibilities

roder@plains.NoDak.edu (Mark Roder) (11/05/90)

When my slab comes, I am going to hook up an external SCSI hard
drive to it. Since I plan on getting programs/apps/utilities from the net,
what is the easiest way to get this on my home machine??

Use floppies. Great idea, but at the present time the university
only has 030 cubes, no floppies. The way spending is going here, it is
doubtful that they get floppies or new computers for a long time.

When/if I get my uucp feed from campus, I could ftp to the
universities computers and then uucp everything over to my machine.
SLOW at 2400 baud.

The third option is bring in my whole computer system and then
hook the NeXT to an ethernet feed, and then transfer everything to my
computer. Inconvenient: Lots of moving and BS just to get files.

The option I am planning on going with is this one. Take my
external SCSI drive to campus and hook it up to the NeXTs on campus.
Will this work?? If my drive is SCSI 1, can I just hook it up to the 030
cubes and start copying files to it? Will the fact that there are two
different versions of the OS screw things up? How compatible are the two
file systems?

Thanks for the information
