[comp.sys.next] October NextAnswers now available

nextanswers@next.com (11/04/90)

The October NextAnswers are now available. See the note below about
the re-organization (there is a monthly supplement in addition to the
complete release, and a new directory called TechSupportNotes).

NextAnswers is a collection of answers to commonly asked technical
questions about the NeXT Computer System. The topics covered include
system administration, programming, and NeXT applications. When
incorporated into Digital Librarian, NextAnswers will supplement the
existing on-line and printed documentation, further helping you to
understand and apply the power of NeXT Computers.

We highly recommend that you obtain NextAnswers and have it installed
on the NeXT computers at your site. NextAnswers can be obtained two
ways: by ftp from an archive server, or--for members of the support
alias, campus consultants, and campus support centers--on an OD from
NeXT if you don't have access to the Internet.

If you don't have Internet access, send an optical disk to:

	NextAnswers
	Technical Support
	NeXT, Inc.
	900 Chesapeake Dr.
	Redwood City, CA 94603

Starting with the October release, there are two versions of
NextAnswers: a complete set, and a monthly supplement for those who
already have an earlier complete set. The former is called
NextAnswers_Oct_90.tar.Z and occupies about 400K of disk space. The
latter is called NA_Supplement_Oct_90.tar.Z, occupies about 190K, and
contains files that are new or changed since the July 90 release.
(There was no September release, as we were busy with our product
introduction. If you have the August release, you should still obtain
the October supplement.) Whether you download the complete set or the
supplement, after you untar it be sure to read the file INSTALL.wn,
because the directory organization has changed to accomodate the new
monthly supplements.

In addition, we have separated the NeXT Technical Support Notes from
NextAnswers. There are currently six TechSupportNotes, each of which
is a fairly lengthy WriteNow file. Separating them out makes the
NextAnswers tar file much smaller, helping you to download it more
quickly. The Technical Support Notes should be individually available
in a directory called TechSupportNotes on the archive server. Each
one has a name of the form filename.wn_month_year.tar.Z, where
month_year is the last time the document was updated, so you can see
at a glance whether it's been changed since you last downloaded it.
Their total size is about 260K. New in October is one called
UUCP.wn_Oct_90.tar.Z.

The October NextAnswers is available on the following Internet archive
servers:
    ________________________________________________________
    hostname IP address directory
    ________________________________________________________
    cs.orst.edu 128.193.32.1 pub/next/documents/NextAnswers
    sonata.cc.purdue.edu 128.210.15.30 pub/next/docs
    umd5.umd.edu 128.8.10.5 NeXT/NextAnswers
    eesun1.arl.utexas.edu 129.107.2.51 public/NeXT/docs

Make sure you have about two megabytes of free space on your disk,
then su to root in aShell and type the following commands. Replace
"filename" with "NextAnswers_Oct_90.tar.Z" or
"NA_Supplement_Oct_90.tar.Z", depending on whether you want the
complete set or the supplement.

	mkdirs /LocalLibrary/NextAnswers
	cd /LocalLibrary/NextAnswers
	ftp hostname-or-IP-address [see table above]
	[Login:] anonymous
[enter your own login name as the password]
ftp> cd directory [see table above for the directory name]
	ftp> binary
	ftp> get filename
	ftp> quit
zcat filename | tar -xvf -

This will create a subdirectory of /LocalLibrary/NextAnswers called
Oct_90. Inside Oct_90 will be a WriteNow file called INSTALL.wn that
contains complete instructions on how to finish the installation.
(Note: contrary to what the INSTALL file says, the untarred directory
is called Oct_90 even if it's a supplement.)

The information below is contained in a file called CHANGES in the
untarred directory:

Here's what I have online from August NextAnswers (extracted with
date/time preserved):

Was this mislabeled as a revision (because the directory's been
touched), or did you ship an old version by mistake?
