[comp.sys.next] Some "new-user" questions

	1. What is the speed of the SIMMS in the 030 and 040 NeXT cube?
I need suggestions on obtaining SIMMS to expand my 030 cube, but
I want to make sure that I will be able to use them on the 040
	    board!

	2. Since the NeXT power supply adjusts to different voltages, would
I need to connect a surge protector, or does it supply its own
	    surge protection?

	3. Is the Lotus Improv' promotion available to buyers who just got
030 NeXT cubes, or do I have to upgrade to the 040?

	4. Where can I find an implementation of a 9600 baud modem using
the DSP chip? Does it exist?

	5. Where can I obtain optical floppies? What do they cost?

	6. I understand there was a problem with the optical drive getting
too much dust from the internal fan, what resulted from this?
What do I need to clean an optical drive? How often should I
clean it? If I leave an optical floppy inserted in the drive,
will it help reduce the dust problem?

Any help will be appreciated ...

Several net-users requested that I post my findings on the following
	questions ...

I got differing comments, but anyway ... The 030 and 040 come with
100 ns SIMMS. When you upgrade the 030 to the 040 you move the
SIMMS over to the new board. You may get parity SIMMS for the 040,
but if you do, all your SIMMS must use parity (the 030 can't use
parity). You can also use faster SIMMS (70 ns, 80 ns).

Again differing comments ... in summary though, USE A SURGE PROTECTOR

You have to get the new 040 or the upgrade to be elligible for the
	Lotus promotion.

Not very much on this question ... Someone mentioned an ftp site
which contains programs for the DSP.

Businessland for $149 (Whoe!!!!!) I've checked some computer
magazines and I've seen them for over $185.

The original 030's fan would cause too much dust to settle in the
OD causing problems (only one person reported actually having a
	problem)
Leaving the OD floppy apparently makes the dust problem worse.
You can obtain a filter directly from NeXT for $10.
No one answered the cleaning part of the above question, so if someone
has any comments on this please send me mail or post them here.
