[comp.sys.next] SLIP for NeXT

rlin@cs.ubc.ca (Robert Lin) (08/10/90)

Yeah, I wrote that article in Tao #3 about SLIP. I've since then found out
some more interesting stuff.

Firstly, normal SLIP would not work because the kernel has no support for
redirecting packets from kernel space into user space, where it could be
re-routed to a modem.

Secondly, Thor Wolpert-Heinrich of SFU told me that a bunch of System
Engineers of NeXT in Pennsylvania actually has a working SLIP, but it is
hard to install. I've asked for the SLIP code but haven't gotten any
answers yet.

If anybody has a working SLIP that is certifiably working for NeXT, I'd
like to hear from them. I've got two USRobotics V.32 modems with V.42bis
compression that can achieve throughputs of up to 38.4Kbps, and I'll write
up an article about SLIP performance in NeXT over these fast modems in
an upcoming issue of Tao, given that I can grab the SLIP from somebody.

Anyone listening in NeXT@Pennsylvania??

I don't know if this was asked before. Is there a slip package for the
Next?

Thank you.
