I thought that would get your attention... ;-) Well, I promised to post if I received confirmation of the rumours that NeXT wont ship this week. Sigh, they wont ship this week. I received a phone call this morning from my NeXT rep who told me that the chips from Motorola are now due to arrive on the 15th. She claims that NeXT is ready to build once shipments of CPUs begin to arrive, and says my machines should thus ship within four days of the chip shipment - ie before the 19th. Well, I was originally told in June that my machines would be ready by the "end of October" and it looks like they miss that by at least three weeks. Of course, Sun claim to be able to ship once they announce. Hmm, is there a debate here on the merits of pre-announcing? Should NeXT (and the others who announce before ship-date) not do this? It gives their competitors ammunition ("they sell vaporware" which has even been said here, despite the fact that many people have seen the 68040s running). On the other hand, this is an industry where the price/performance leader seems to change weekly. Keeping yourself positioned in this market is tough. For the record, I'm not mad. I need the machines soon, but another week or two wont break me and they've been pretty square. Of course, I got faster response to my queries _before_ we issued the P.O. :-) (So, how about it? What _WILL_ you guys due to support our X project?) Anyways, let's see what everyone has to say....... - peterd ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Why is it that some of the `smart' users posting about `dumb' users manage to get _two_ copies of their signature in their articles?" - asked by Boyd Roberts in alt.folklore.computer ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Why is it that some of the `smart' users posting about `dumb' users manage to get _two_ copies of their signature in their articles?" - asked by Boyd Roberts in alt.folklore.computer -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wonder what quantities NeXT will start shipping. With other words, I wonder volume of '040's they will be able to secure from Motorola, once they do start shiping ? How far backordered is NeXT with the NeXTStation as well as the '040 upgrade ? If I order a NeXTStation or an upgrade today, when should I get it ? -ingo -- /* Ingo Cyliax ECN, Electrical Engineering Bldg. * * cyliax@ecn.purdue.edu Purdue University, W. If machines ship on Nov 19th, then it's only a 60-day pre-announce. It would take me at least 60 days to make up my mind to buy such a beast. I still need to spend some time using a public NeXT box at this university before i am convinced to plunk down the $3500 price. $3500 for a device not used is $3500 wasted. Furthermore, this university hasn't even organized its student sales / support operation, so even if machines were ready Sept 15, they probably couldn't have been sold until this month anyway. Sixty days is not a large lead time -- 9-12 months (IBM's practice with some mainframes) IS a large lead time.
