[comp.sys.next] TeX on the Slab

solomon@obsidian.indiana.edu (bruce solomon) (11/13/90)

Can anyone give me a comparison (based on experience) between TeX as it
runs on an '030/1.0 cube, and TeX on a '040/2.0 slab? In particular,
how much faster does the previewer work on the new machine?

I am advising a friend regarding purchase of a new computer. He is
considering a 105mb slab + extended 2.0, dumping much of the
bundled software so as to fit, say, mainly TeX, Mathematica, Edit,
WriteNow, the OS, and on his disk. It looks to me like this is a
feasible plan. Anyone disagree or have other comments?

I myself have '030 cube #326. After close to two years now, I am
completely addicted to it, although I've fallen into a love/hate
relationship with the OD, which is VERY cranky in my dusty office.
