[comp.sys.next] RCS and NeXT

rob@lighthouse.com (11/14/90)

As others have said, if you are experiencing problems using RCS with
long file names, then you have a *very* old version of RCS. The
latest release of RCS is version 4.3 and it can be obtained via
anonymous ftp from:
	arthur.cs.purdue.edu (128.10.2.1)	pub/RCS/rcs.tar
						pub/RCS/rcs.tar.Z
After you obtain the distribution from Purdue, you should be able to
build the software by adding the "-bsd" switch to the CFLAGS macro in
the Makefile.

NeXTstep 2.0 and RCS
====================
The 2.0 operating system ships with RCS Version 4.3 commands in
/usr/bin.

The Future of RCS
=================
A new version of RCS, Version 5.5, is currently in beta testing and
should be released *very soon*. In addition to the RCS commands a new
version of GNU diff is provided in the distribution which is necessary
to diff binaries. One of the huge advantages of Version 5.5 is that
RCS will handle binary files.

Being able to use RCS on binary files means that it will now be
possible to provide version control on "tiff", "snd", "proj", and
most importantly "nib" files.
