[net.auto] HONDA CIVIC HEATER needs replacement, Advice?

ems@amdahl.UUCP (ems) (10/21/85)

Well, it finally happened. After my bragging about 150,000
miles on my Honda CIVIC without significant repair (water pump
at 120k had been it, $84 ) I now have a problem.

My heater started peeing on my foot. Seems that the heater core
rusted through. Not so big a deal for a 1980, you say? What's
a little heater core? About $500 says my mechanic! Seems that
you have to remove the entire dash/instrument cluster, steering
assembly, first born son, etc. This takes a full day at $xx.xx/hr.

I would like to know what experiences the net has had with heater
replacement in the 198x CIVIC. Is this for real? Is it something
that I should try myself (tedium, but no special tools. Just time.)
or something where I should grit my teeth and pay for it to be done
(Special tools, skills, techniques, high risk of blowing it)

Sigh.
