[comp.sys.next] DialUpIP causes hair loss.

memphis (Ronald V. Simmons) (11/27/90)

As I'm sure others did, I ftp'd the
version of DialUpIP (SLIP for the cube) that was
mentioned on the net a couple of weeks ago. After much head scratching,
(that's the hair loss part, I don't even qualify as a TCP/IP
novice, much less guru) I think I have the
part down that connects me to a remote mainframe somewhere thats running
SLIP. Unfortunately, that's not the part that I need. The part I need
is the one that the documentation (sic) says is easy, i.e. hooking 2 cubes
together so that I can do neat stuff like Speaker/Listener pairs that
really, really work at long range and remote Sybase queries, et al.

I'm reasonably sure that I am missing something silly since
I can see from the log files that are generated by my modem script that I get
connected to the remote host. However, when I ping (or ftp, or mount -t nfs)
nothing happens. I suspect that what's missing is that I'm not communicating
with the inet or netinfo demons on the other side, but I can't figure out how
to make this happen. Of course, I could be completely mistaken, too.

If you have any suggestions or experience, please respond via e-mail to

any good stuff to the net.
