[net.auto] old ford generator problem

judith@mit-amt.MIT.EDU (Judith Donath) (10/23/85)

Thanks to everyone who gave suggestions about fixing the car. I finally
got a rebuilt generator, and it seems to be running just fine. For anyone
with similar problems, suggestions of things to check were:
	- the generator (obvious, and in this case, it)
	- the voltage regulator
	- the wiring: especially in older cars, it is possible for an
inexperienced mechanic to hook up various things back
wards, which will kill the battery.
	- fuses: if the car is losing power overnight, see if something
is drawing energy even when apparently off (someone had
had the same problem as I did and it was traceable to the
		windshield wiper motor).

No comment to those who said "Why don't you just junk it?" It's been running
for 21 years, and I'm hoping to keep it for at least another 10 (with lots of
questions to the net, I'm sure).
