I am trying to put together a grant proposal here at the U of Minnesota that would involve using NeXT computers in a voice recognition development project. Unfortunately, the deadline for the proposal comes up in a few days, so I am asking you experts to write me a couple of lines about what you know of voice recognition. My ideas revolve around having students in a foreign language speak a word using the mic. The NeXT compares each word to a digitized catalog of target words. If the match is close enough, the NeXT will print the word (making sure that the word pronounced is the word the student missed.) If it isn't close enough, perhaps several clues will be provided. I am fairly knowledgeable on sound production on Macs, but so far my NeXT experience is mostly hearsay and dreaming about the NeXT potential as a foreign language teacher. Thanks in advance for ideas, suggestions, etc. --------------- Louis Janus Scandinavian Dept U of Minnesota Minneapolis, MN 612/822-1015 (h)
