I've successfully used a variety of different microphones with my cube, ranging from the Sony mini-condenser mike NeXT uses internally to a ~$30 hand-held Radio Shack model to a set of Sony studio headphones... I've had excellent results with the small Sony microphone (with AAA battery); I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to do some 8 KHz sound recording. Above that, of course, you get into ~>$500 DSP equipment. -Declan ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Olympic Technologies / Registered NeXT Developers \ declan@portia.stanford.edu ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry to be posting regarding a topic which has been discussed in the past, but I'd like a rehash of cheap microphones which can be used with the NeXT. I just got a cube from the businessland fire sale... thanks in advance. --paul sanchez paul@tucson.sie.arizona.edu

I just got one of the Businessland '030 demo cubes, and was wondering what would be a reasonable microphone to use with it. I know this was discussed a couple of months ago, but at the time I didn't know I would be the owner of a cube so soon. Thanks in advance. --paul sanchez paul@tucson.sie.arizona.edu

>I asked Trey Matteson what they use at NeXT and he recommended >"Sony Electret Condenser Microphone ECM-K7" This sounds like an excellent choice. I would have sprung for this microphone myself had I been able to find one. Since the audio requirements in this application are not high, I opted for an easier to find solution. Radio Shack stocks a small electret condenser mic, catalog number 33-1060 which can be had in any Radio Shack for about $18. True, it is made from plastic and it is from RS, but it does work, and is small and black, and blends in well with the cube. If you can handle the definite non-yuppieness of buying something from Radio Shack to go along with your ultimate-yuppie NeXT Cube, slink into your local store and do it. -- Paul Homchick :UUCP {rutgers | uunet} !cbmvax!cgh!paul Chimitt Gilman Homchick, Inc. :Internet cgh!paul@dsi.com 259 Radnor-Chester Rd, Suite 140 :MCI PHOMCHICK Radnor, PA 19087-5299 :GEnie HOMCHICK

I wouldn't use it for professional recording but for my needs it's GREAT-- and the price sure beats the $64 for the Sony. -Charlie
