[comp.sys.next] Next docs, printing, nonsense

[quoting arguments for and against the Amiga, NeXT,etc...]

Look, I have a NeXT cube, a Mac, GS and maybe one day an Amiga or a PC. The
point is that software and the reasons for usage drives puchases( and
finances obviously). Could all of this nonsense w.r.t. the Amiga and the
NeXT please stop? If it doesn't I'll get rid of the NeXT and never buy an
Amiga! In short it would be nice if people on both sides would stop acting
like 2 year olds.

On another note, does anyone know of a printer driver to any of the HP inkjet
printers, especially the Painjet. Printing to an Apple ImageWriter is not my
idea of anything wothwhile. Where are the drivers?

Also, I really have this beef about the documentation which comes with the
NeXT. Or perhaps I should say lack of documentation. I'm not a computer guru,
but I didn't appreciate having to rebuild a 330meg HD in a mad quest to try
to get rid of a demo program( FrameMaker) after I had installed the version
I bought.

Nowhere in the manuals does it tell you how to logon as root once you are on
the system. Once you set up a password for yourself and reboot the computer
it is easily done as the login dialog box is presented. However, I don't want
to use the NeXT as a Unix workstation. I got it to replace my Macs, and I
don't want to worry about passwords. Presumably there may be some way of
changing the file protections using Netinfo, but I'm not going to spend years
trying to figure that one out( I tried for a couple of hours).

Another issue is on booting from the optical, is there any way of seeing the
330meg hard disk? This is not discussed anywhere. Anyway I haven't the
patience to become a systems' programmer. Either this thing turns into a
more user friendly system soon( am still waiting for 2.0, 040, floppy) or
it'll be sold.

By the way, I do think the NeXT is really nice and it could be a great system.
But I'm not going to wait until I'm 50 to find out.

Right now, you cannot legally print raster images to a printer with more
than 150 dpi from a NeXT - it's in the legalize in the license. With
NextStep2.0, this limit has been raised to _900_ dpi (really, seriously),
so expect those drivers to start appearing soon after 2.0 hits the
streets . . . (where soon==(when EricPScott || RobertLin get 2.0 :-)).

Also, I really have this beef about the documentation which comes with the

I have to agree. The 2.0 docs are supposed to be much better than
the 1.0 ones - they are supposed to be finished 2.0 docs, not just
finished 1.0 docs with unfinished 2.0 extensions.

patience to become a systems' programmer. Either this thing turns into a

How much? Naw, just kidding . . .

Not that I heard we have no legal problem to use those
non-Post script printers, I would like to express my wish.
Please someone write a driver for Canon BJ10 bubble jet printer.
One of my friend has this printer for his PC. This has 360dpi
resolution ( less than 900 dpi !!) and can be bought for
about $300.
I even think NeXT should sell this printer since NeXT and Canon are
really good friends.

I'm not going to be writing drivers for equipment I don't have
available. If someone would like to donate a "current model" HP
inkjet printer and documentation to the SFSU Computer Science
Department (contributions are U.S. tax-deductible) I'm more
likely to be persuaded.

We're not going to be running 2.0 here for a couple of weeks; so
much has changed that it would be a major shock to our user
community. There's some stuff I really like in 2.0 (and some
really, truly stupid breakage). It doesn't seem to have quite
the robustness of 1.0a, but with the rumored 2.1 release a
couple of months away, I'm hoping the problems will be ironed
out soon enough. In any case, my first order of business is to
attend to the networking software, so expect the usual slew of
FTPables. (BTW, thanks for including traceroute and ntp!)

As usual, NeXT giveth and NeXT taketh away, so if you have older
distribution media, don't trash them when you get your 2.0
upgrades. You may want to restore a few things that "disappear"
but are still "good."
