Well I just received my v2.0 and 040 upgrade for my older cube. Upgrading to 2.0 was no problem. However, after upgrading to the 040 the machine worked but only from the OD. It no longer recognized the hard disk(!). Re-seating the drive connector three times didn't help. I found that the drive worked again after re-installing the 030 board (I thought I might have done something nasty trying to cram the OD filter inside the cube, whew!). The problem was associated with the presence of the 040 board. I called NeXT (they responded within the hour) and they told me this was a 'known problem'. The workaround they gave me is this: ------------------------ Boot from the OD. Become Root Launch a shell type the command line: disk -b /dev/rsd0a Set the boot volume to Hard Disk in Preferences Power Down Power Up It should now boot from the hard disk and You're home free! ----------------------- Apparently the boot block on the hard drive gets lost in the upgrade shuffle. The command line above forces the boot program to be written to the boot block on the hard disk. NeXT says that they are now including an Erratum with 040 upgrades spelling this out. =============== Peter -- =============================================== judge@credit.erin.utoronto.ca (Peter Judge) |) judge@gpu.utcs.utoronto.ca ===============================================
