[comp.sys.next] Data Acq on NexT??

isr@rodan.acs.syr.edu (Michael S. Schechter - ISR group account) (12/12/90)

first of all, I know virtually nada eabout the Next except that
the cube has 3 slots, and a 56001 port. I'd like to find out more
about what that slot and also what kind of boards are avilible for it.
1) the DSP port:
is this the 56001's SCC?? is it both receive and transmit?
is it possible to us ethis port to INPUT the frame sync and
bit clocks to the DSP? (for phase locking with other ones)
Does the NeXT provide 16-bit quality analog output from the
56001? (ie, is analog circuitry clean to 90+ dB)
2) Slots:
     are theire expansion chassis avilible?
Are their boards with A/D's D/A's digital i/o's aviail?
     boards with 56001's?

    Specifically what I need is:
A board to capture the arrival time of TTL impulses with
1-usec resoulotion, on two channels, with a minimum of
24 bits of time data saved. The board also needs a FIFO
or DMA to main memory. (sustained data rate of 10kHz)

Another board with either a DSP andtwo channels of D/A
and A/D on it. (for two channels of signal averaging)
(In addition to the main DSP which would be synthesizing
output waveforms while this one is avergaing inputs)

     A digital i/o board with 32 channels settable to i or o
     in 8-bit sections.

Are boards such as this avilible from 3rd parties?
Can you email me company names? suggestions?

Oh, one more thing.. can the NeXT read/write Mac floppies?
I see from the one time I read this group there isn't much
support for app files, but i can always just write my data
out and convert it however to whatever.. if I can write floppies.

Or, barring that, will a Next(out of the box) function as an FTP server for
my Mac's? (thru a Gatorbox-ethernet)

P.S. please respond directly as I'll only be reding this group
for a couple of days..
Mike_Schechter@isr.syr.edu or SENSORY@SUNRISE (bitnet)
Thanks.

The DSP port provides access to the SSI (I can't think of a reason off
hand to use the SCC for data aquisition) for sure. You can have frame
sync in and bit clock in for sure. The A/D hardware from Ariel and
Metaresearch use frame sync (unfortunately, one means R/~L and the other
means L/~R). As far as analog output goes, it is handled by D/A
circuitry in the monitor. Your host code and set up a DMA channel from
the DSP to the D/A. I am not sure of D/A's spec's though.

For the other stuff, I am not sure if it will satisfy your requirements,
but Ariel is producing a 5 processor 56000 system.
