I am new to the Next world and unable to find a Next commercial contact here in Montreal, so I would like to ask this group a few basic questions. Please respond/flame by email to avoid annoying the group. I have seen the new Nexts at OOPSLA and they interested me enough that I'm preparing a proposal to investigate the Nexts for our environment. We have a large installed base of Macs and Suns. How would the Nexts fit into that environment? Namely: 0. Is there a Canadian 800 number where I could ask the Next 4 questions? 1. Can the Next print to a Laserwriter on an Appletalk-Ethernet gatewayed net? 2. Can the Next feed from a Sun NFS server on Ethernet? 3. How tough is it to port from Next to Sun (using X, not NextStep of course)? (I suppose this means "What are the main differences between the 2 Unixes?") 4. What applications would you see as replacing the following Mac applications: Mac Next --- ---- Adobe Illustrator Adobe Illustrator Excel Improv MacDraw ? Kaleidagraph ? Word ? PageMaker ? PowerPoint ? On each of the 4 questions, please feel free to comment on personal experiences. Thankyou for your time. Can the Next feed from a Sun NFS server on Ethernet? Yes. My cube is both an NFS client and server. >3. Are you trying to port "X" applications to NeXT, or vanilla unix sources? "X" is not shipped by NeXT, although a 3rd party "xnext" is available. I've played with an X11R3 version and found it quite buggy. I haven't seen the X11R4 version yet, but rumors have it that it is much better. If you really mean "what is UNIX like?", then you will find it very similar to any BSD unix. I have ported lots of stuff from SunOS to NeXT without even thinking about it. >4. What applications would you see as replacing the following Mac applications: Good question. I am not a MAC user, so I will leave this to someone else. --- Marc Majka System Manager UBC Computer Science
